HELLO! CORBIN LAISURE – WELCOME TO THE BLACK AND GOLD

This is a post in the series introducing CU fans to CU’s freshman enrollees.  To see the previous Hello post, see

Position:

Tight end.

Size:

Laisure is listed on most recruiting websites at 6’6”, 230 pounds.  On the CU roster, however, Laisure is listed at 6’5”, 225 pounds…meaning the Colorado altitude shrunk Corbin by an inch and 5 pounds.

Offers:

Laisure committed to the Buffs over offers from Arizona State, Louisville, Ole Miss, Syracuse and 5 MAC-level programs.

Rankings:

Laisure is among the lower ranked players in last year’s class.  He was ranked a 3-star player by all 4 recruiting services, the 101st ranked tight end in the country and the #1420 player in the country.

ESPN rates him highest, as the #28 tight end nationally.

247 ranks him the #96 tight end nationally and On3 as the #122 tight end nationally.

High School:

Laisure committed to Colorado after playing his junior year at Sullivan East High School in Bluff City, Tennessee.  Sullivan East is a relatively small high school with an enrollment of 849 students.

While at Sullivan East, Laisure often flexed out wide as his team played a 10-personnel offensive scheme (1 running back, 4 wide receivers, and no tight end).  Laisure caught 64 passes for 756 yards and 10 touchdowns and also racked up 116 tackles at linebacker.  During his junior year Laisure played basketball and averaged over 16 points and 11 rebounds per game.

For his senior year, Laisure moved to Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tennessee (Wagon Wheel fans let’s go!).  Science Hill is a much larger high school with 2,424 students and includes Steve Spurrier as an alum.  While at Science Hill, Laisure played in more traditional 11-and-12 personnel offensive schemes, and he helped lead the team to an 8-3-1 record. He had about 400 yards receiving on the season.

The scoooooooop:

Tight end has been a mess at Colorado over the last few years. Former highly touted transfers like Seydou Traore and Chamon Metayer each commiteed to Colorado only to leave before the season started. Michael Harrison had some receiving success in the 2023 season, and Savell Smalls was a useful blocker on occasion in 2024, but this position has been a relative black hole for the Coloardo offense. The good news is that there are several players on the way — inclduing Corbin Laisure. Laisure is looking to bring stability to a position that has had very little during the Deion Sanders era at CU.

Laisure committed to Colorado nearly a year ago. For more on his decision, see the video below:

Laisure told rivals that he picked Coloardo because of the coaching staff. He noted:

“First off I love the coaching staff. They are all genuine and good people who have great relationships with the players. Boulder is a very special place and there is no place like it. I know that playing at CU will develop me as a player and man. As well as give me the platform to ball out and spread the love of Jesus.”

Last year Laisure made a camp stop at the Under Armour Next Camp in Nashville. While he was not named one of the Top Performers, he was listed as a player to watch going forward.

Roll the tape!

Laisure is more of a receiving tight end than a blocking tight end at this stage. Watching his highlight tape, he looks to be more of a Michael Harrison-type tight end right now. He high points the football very well, he tracks the ball well in space, and he catches the ball with his hands (as opposed to catching the ball with his body).

For Laisure to develop into a 3 down tight end, he’ll need to work on his size and strength. He doesn’t have a lot of film of him blowing defensive linemen and linebackers off the ball. While he has a big frame, he appears slightly skinny and will put on additional weight in a college strength and conditioning program. It wouldn’t shock me if, in 12 months, we have a 6’6″ 245 pound monster at tight end and are asking ourselves — where did this guy come from?

But how will he fit into the CU multi-verse?

Laisure visited Boulder several times before committing and he notes that he’s excited to get to campus to “get to work with the team building relationships with the players and coaches.” He added he’s “excited to show [his] talent at the highest platform and see what God has planned for the next chapter of [his] life.” He comes across as quiet and understated in his videos, which is quite a contrast to some of his teammates.

Overall excitement level:

2.5 stars (out of 5). Laisure will in all likelihood redshirt this fall as he needs to get bigger and stronger, but he has the frame and athletic ability to become a productive player for Colorado. Tight end is not a deep position for the Buffs, so it’s possible Laisure sees the field this season. If so, he may struggle moving defensive linemen and linebackers in the blocking game but he has the chance to be productive in the receiving game.
